My favorite yogi is Tara Stiles. The New York Times called her a Yoga Rebel a long time ago, and I liked the sound of that so I looked her up. From time to time, Tara quotes Ram Dass, “We are all just walking each other home.” Tara and Ram Dass inspired a song for me with this chorus:
We are all in this together
We are on the road of life
We look out for each other
No matter the strain or strife
For we are one with each other
We’re all sisters and brothers
’cause we’re all just walking each other home.
This song is part of a collection of bluegrass/country songs I am currently writing for the band I’m putting together, April Eight’s Hoot and Holla! I mean, how fun is that? I grew up in the rural Midwest and bluegrass and country are in my bones. When I tap in, songs pour out.
Last Sunday some of the folks in my Riverside Choir-Cincinnati jumped up to sing with me for a wonderful audience at The Leo Coffeehouse here in Cinci.
Sing along!
I walked out one cold dark morning
Sliver of moon still shining bright
Then I heard a robin calling
Says to myself, “Ah this is life!”
chorus
Then I walked out into the fields
Mist a-hovering like a veil
Cloaking all this world in a mystery
Says to myself, “Ah, this is wealth!”
chorus
Then I walked down into the green woods
Glory and grace spread before me
A heaven on Earth free for the asking
Says to myself, “Let me be peace!”
chorus
bridge
Home home home, take my hand and we’ll go home
Where Love shines forever in our souls
We’re all on Earth together, let’s try to learn from one another
’Cause we’re all just walking each other home.
Well there’s big old cities and country lanes
Folks walking side by side or toe to toe
Lend me your hand if you’re going my way
Says to myself, “Let’s a-walk on home!”
chorus
Take my hand and we’ll walk each other home.
