A Crack in the Sidewalk

My dear Gentlefolk, Everything is always changing. I share here a video from my instagram #everydaystorytelling challenge. Leonard Cohen said, “There is a crack in everything. That is how the light gets in.” I would add that’s how life gets in. That crack is your fertile ground for growth. And I’d say that the remedy, the kintsugi, for just about every crack is to Love yourself more.

The Japanese art of repairing a broken object with gold has been much talked about in the last few years. They call it kintsugi.

Something Stirring

Something new is stirring over here at April Eight… a shift that feels both brave and beautiful. As the seasons change, so does my storytelling path, and I’d love to share it with you…

First things first, I am booking and sharing song and story performances. Send me a note about your favorite places to bring your children for arts events. I’m on the go.

I’m stepping out of podcasting and into book and audiobook authoring. When I started the April Eight Songs & Stories Podcast, podcasting was very new (2016!). I wanted to share songs and stories that made children feel safe and seen. Inspired by Sparkle Stories, who was perhaps the first storytellers for children on that platform, I jumped in.

Thanks for reading Stay Up Late with April Eight! This post is public so feel free to share it.

I never imagined how far my stories would fly.

Storyteller Me at the Maryland Fairy Festival in 2012. I shared The Butterfly Adventurer, the songs and story of Thom Gnome and the search for a magical Golden Butterfly.

An Innocent World

Now I’m ready to bring these tales into a new format—one that feels more secure. I know that parenting with the internet is a wild ride. I continue to explore ways to share my work with you in a safe haven of cozy innocence that is aligned with where your children are developmentally.

I’m currently rewriting some of my favorite podcast stories for the audiobook realm. This means I get to dig in deeper artistically in all the ways that I enjoy most.

Writing for a podcast schedule is a quick turn around. Now I am talking with these characters: children, animals, grandpas, gnomes, and fairies. I’ve come to adore them and it a hoot to ask them all sorts of questions.

I get to see what songs they want to sing, what places they like best to go, who they want to talk to, and what they’re curious about. It is such a treat!

I made this painting of a rain cloud and a rainbow before I knew I was going to write stories.

A Gentle Request

If a story or song has stayed with you and your children, would you leave me a note in the comments? I’m gathering favorite moments from families as I shape the next chapter of April Eight, and your voice means the world to me.

I’ll be there reading your words and replying—dog by my side and heart wide open.

I’m doing an #everydaystorytelling series over on Instagram. The idea is about all the beauty that surrounds us that we take for granted. All the funny and sweet stories within our day-to-day lives. Like the one I share in the caption about my sister rescuing the bluebells from a cantankerous neighbor’s yard.

Doggie Doodle

And what would life be without a journal doggie doodle?

Until next time, May the wind carry wonder, and the trees whisper your name. And remember, you are wonderful just as you are right now.
